Day 58: Butternut Squash Face

For our last Saturday afternoon activity of 2016, we carved a butternut squash!

Look at this creepy and cute little fellow!

Originally, we were going to carve a pumpkin today, but Bill decided that would be too banal (and redundant since we carved one for this blog last year), so he suggested carving a butternut squash instead. There are a number of great versions of this craft out there on the internet, some of which use radishes for the eyes. We didn't have any radishes so we opted for apples instead. Because you know, we still have a ton of apples leftover from our earlier apple picking extravaganza. At any rate, all you need for this craft are a butternut squash, an apple, toothpicks, and a knife. Optional: a votive candle and craft wire for hanging.

Anyhow, I know everybody has super cool Halloween plans for the evening, so let's get this Halloween show on the road, shall we?

The aforementioned supplies!

Cut, pensive blogger! Cut!

So to perfect that gorgeous butternut mug, cut out spaces for two eyes,
a small nose, and a mouth. You can leave the mouth gaping or carve
teeth into it. We shall leave that choice up to you!

I for one cut out some teeth. He looked a little creepier that way!

They call me apple-eyed Gwen! Okay, they don't really. But these are how the
eyes looked when we were done. Just little slivers of apples with a
bit of skin left on for the pupils!

Skewer those eyes with one toothpick each, and you have your butternut squash face!
Observe here where I'm trying to match my own maniacal smile to
my butternut's. I think I'm doing a pretty good job too!

"I love you, Butternut Squash Face!"

And a final shot of our butternut, all lit up and ready to go!

And that is our blog for today! Enjoy your parties tonight, be safe (no Halloween drinking and driving, or Mr. Butternut Squash Face might kill you in your dreams!), and head on back here tomorrow for more Halloween good times!
